Evaluation of AOTT Activity

My group came up with a film called 'MINE'. The film is a crime-thriller. The opening is about a woman walking to work, we see the kidnapper watching her and at the end of the opening she gets kidnapped and thrown in the boot of a car. The film as a whole is centered around the kidnapper and the detectives hunting him down. The woman taken is the wife of the detective and the aim of the film is for him to find her and get her back.

In the film opening we meet two of the main characters, the victim and the kidnapper. We also get an idea of the genre of the film from the mask motif which comes across as creepy and hides the identity of the kidnapper, creating interest in this character. We showcase the two main actresses and the director in the titles.

The main film idea is surrounding a masked kidnapper. The title 'mine' is supposed to represent the kidnappers feelings towards the woman, that she is 'his'. 'Mine' is also a short, catchy word which easily catches the audiences attention, it also creates a dramatic effect which reflects the drama and chaos happening in the film.

The opening we have created is designed to be ambiguous. I expect the audience to be slightly confused by the end of the opening, as they have seen the woman getting kidnapped, however we have left it unclear as to why this happened. The audience should also feel the drama and tension in the scene by the end of the opening, as the close-up images enable you to see the woman's reaction, involving the audience in these feelings too.

The first thing that you must have in the opening sequence to a film is meeting one or more of the main characters. We meet the kidnapper from nearly the very beginning, this helps the audience to get a connection with the film, as they learn very soon on what this character is like, linking them to the action waiting to happen. In a film opening, you also need to have opening credits in your opening sequence, to promote the actors in the film. Lastly, you should have a range of framing in your shots, in our case to create dramatic effect. The last close up on the mask is dramatic as you learn that the film is surrounding a masked figure which some audiences may find scary.

I think that our project was effective as a film opening because it promotes the genre of the film, being a thriller due to the mask motif and use of some dark lighting. It also hooks in the audience with the introduction of the main characters so they feel in some way connected to the girl getting kidnapped.
